A Study on the Effects of Depression on Death Anxiety and the Moderating Effect of Life Satisfaction of Elders

Abstract
The aim of this study is to examine the moderating effect of life satisfaction on the relationship between the level of depression and death anxiety of elders. 309 elders participated as the subjects of the study who were above 65 years old in Jeollabuk Do(Jeonju city, lksan city, Gunsan city, Namwon city, Gimje city, Jeongeup city, Wanju, Buan, Gochang). A survey was conducted from Dec. 26 2009 to Jan. 17 2010. Structural Equation Modeling in AMOS 17 was adopted to examine measurement model and moderating effects of life satisfaction by using Ping¡¯s tow-step model. The results showed that life satisfaction had a moderating effect on the level of depression and death anxiety of elders. The level of depression also had a positive effect on death anxiety of elders. In addition one¡¯s education level, health, attitude toward euthanasia, social life were significantly correlated with his or her death anxiety. Based on these findings it is suggested that social work intervention service should be discussed to reduce the level of depression and increase the level of life satisfaction among elders.
